What to do about Kujo? 5 Years, 10 Months ago
Hey..I post on the cat forum regularly. I have a problem in my new home. I have many cats most of which never see the light of day. I have three that go outside. One in the day and two at night.

The neighbor (I only have one as I live on two acres) has a dog I have named Kujo. It is very aggressive and has tried to harm the cats. The dog comes over on our property to do this.

I am looking for a sollution as to not have to do anything harmful to Kujo as I love all animals but will do what is necessary if he attacks on my property.

Is there a product or anything I can use to make ths dog stay away? I will try one more time to speak with the young lady owner but she has no fence and the dog is not leashed.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated including ways to approach the owner and/or what to say.

Thanks

Hi, I guess I would start by finding out what the leash law is in your area. Some areas don't have one. I live in a semi rural area, and we have one - I have 20 acres. If you have a leash law for dogs, approach her and mention that her dog has
been on your property again, and that you would hate to have anything happen to your animals or hers but for "Kujos" benefit could she please keep him contained. If you do have a leash law you are in rights to take the dog and call animal control or the sheriff to come get the dog. They may return him directly home, but the owner will have to provide proof of rabies, etc. This can become more a issue for her if it continues. Because if he happened to bite you not to mention the cats, there would be medical and vet bills. Also notify her if you would ... that in the event one of your pets or yourself is bit that she would need to pay the bills. I am not sure how serious the issue is or if it matters that you get along. But animals can put a huge wall between neighbors. Myself, I get allot of dogs at my house from neighbors who moved on a couple acres and think they can leave their dogs run, and the dogs will stay in the yard... ya right. One dog has a dealth wish, as it keeps going to my horse pasture. I have notified the neighbor that my mare WILL kill a dog in her pasture and that I will not accept any responsibility financial or other wise if my horse kills her dog in my pasture, BUT that if my horse is injured in the action, that I would expect her to pay any vet bills I got. I was very straight forward. This lady is a friend of mine. Have I had her dog in my yard since? yup sure have, and I call her every single time... just so she knows that her dog was "at large" again. That in itself becomes a issue for her. But animal control would be worse, because they require the dog to have a tag, and they also fine the person for not containing their dog. So in that part I feel I am doing her a favor, as I know she isnt keeping her dog UTD on shots & registration. Best of luck !!

Maybe you could build a cat enclosure for your cats, something that you can put them in so that they can be outside without being hurt. Letting your cats go out at night could be potentially dangerous, being hit by a car is one thing that comes to mind. If your cats are declawed they can't protect themselves by climbing a tree to get away from danger.
I have 4 cats and they are not allowed outside except for my one male who will sneak out the door if our backs are turned, he especially loves going out at night. He is a very good hunter & we ended up finding dead rodents around the yard. We didn't treat him with Frontline & he brought fleas in the house to the rest of the cats & we also ended up worming him when he started dropping weight because of eating birds, mice & such. It was not fun and this year we are making sure his furry little butt doesn't get past the door. You can go online & find plans to building your own cat enclosure. It's just a thought.

Thanks for the post but an enclosure is out. I moved out in the sticks on acreage so they would have a nice place to run around and not worry about cars. Not build cage for them.

I have taken the necessary steps with advantage and such to make sure they wont get fleas etc. Aside from Kujo raccoons pose the biggest problem. Coons get trapped and moved.

The girl said she would start leashing Kujo. I think when she found out how serious I was she decided to take the necessary steps to make sure we all got along.

I am hopeful.
