Dog Bite Prevention

What to do if our are confronted:

  1. Stand still, stop what you are doing.
  2. Don't panic, If you panic the dog will also.  Neither of you can think and respond in the correct way if you panic.
  3. Position yourself so you always have the dog in front of you.  Try not to corner yourself or the dog.
  4. Don't turn your back on the dog.  
  5. Don't run or scream.  Or the dog will follow.
  6. Put something in front of you and the dog.  A clipboard, briefcase, or mail bag/cart. This will give you a barrier of protection.
  7. Keep the object level with the dog's head.  Don't wave it around.
  8. Tell the dog, "NO!" Use a firm and even voice.  Make the dog respect your voice.

What to do if you are bitten:

  1. Get and accurate description of the dog.
  2. Find out where the dog lives.
  3. Report the bite to the Department of Animal Control.
  4. Get medical attention for any animal bite, they can easily become infected.
