I have been thinking about getting a parrot (not sure what breed yet). I'm realy not sure if our family is ready for an 60-80 year commitment. Has any one adopted a parrot? and how did it go? Do you have any recommendations?

It seems to me that there should be a lot of older parrots who need a home after the owner has moved or moved on

Birds especially parrots need alot of tlc! they are soooo super intelegent and can go crazy without the every day attention it needs, this is a huge investment and really needs alot of thought. they usually bond with one person and can be aggressive (bite your finger off, ear, etc.) if you do want to make a lifetime comimentment more power to you! i would suggest though to find one real young so you can help hand feed it. this will give you the oppportunity to set boundaries and to bond together more easily through the years. this is a decision you will need to really think about and be prepared to spend a fortune in care, and remember who will care for em when your gone. best wishes have fun! remember to talk first then teach how to whistle if you teach whistling first (to Easy) they may never talk and to get them to talk better make tapes of things and play it on a recirculating tape or cd they can learn all day while your at work. you can leave talk radio on etc.
