The Shelter had extensive renovations in early 1998 which more than doubled its previous capacity. We now have 44 indoor/outdoor dog runs, with 20 runs reserved for dogs awaiting adoption to good homes, numerous outdoor exercise yards, 12 cages for cats ready for adoption, and large indoor exercise areas for the cats, as well as extra isolation cages and "new arrivals" areas.
Unfortunately, we're usually overflowing with unwanted animals, averaging approximately 15% of adoptions each year. In 2001 we cared for 3,310 animals, 238 of those pets were reunited with their owners and the other 15% were adopted. In 2002 we cared for 4,024 animals, 267 were reunited with their owners and the other 15% were adopted.
The Lake Martin Humane Society was organized in October, 1982 for the purpose of preventing cruelty to animals. We planned to do this in two ways: by providing an Animal Shelter to care for unwanted animals, and by initiating various programs to teach the public about responsible pet ownership. All the work of the Humane Society, except the operation of the Shelter itself, is done by volunteers.
The Shelter, located near the Airport (behind the Armory), opened in July, 1983. We have fairly strict adoption policies for Shelter animals in an effort to assure each one a good home. The Adoption Fee includes the cost of having the adopted pet spayed or neutered.
LMHS is a non-profit, tax exempt organization and as such, all donations to it are deductible for tax purposes. We receive financial support from the City of Alex City, in exchange for which we care for all animals turned in by the City Animal Control Officer. However, we also depend heavily on individual donations and memberships in the humane society for our support.
