Summer is over but the heat continues. Continue keeping your dog safe by fallowing a few simple rules.
- When it is hot, keep your dog at home and out of the car. Your car can reach 120 degrees in just a few minutes. Even the back of a truck does not provide adequate shade. Give your dog a portabl raised dog bed like the one below for a convenient cool bed.
- Give your pet plenty of water. Water will not only hydrate them, but will help them keep cool' If you have a hard time keeping the bowl of water full all day, pick up an autmatic fountin like this one bellow.
 | Contech WaterDog Automatic Outdoor Pet Fountain Give your pet fresh water on demand with our WaterDog Automatic Outdoor Pet Fountain. WaterDog's sonar sensors detect when your pet approaches and turns on the water. When your pet leaves, WaterDog turns off the water.Requires only an outdoor spigot and four C batteries.Operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, assuring that your pet always has a supply of fresh clean water. |
- Hot really hot days limit your dogs exercise time. When it is hot, keep from over exersizing or playing hard with your pet. Your dog will push himself just to make you happy. Pets can also suffer heat exhaustion if they are out side to long.
- Your dog can get sunburn just like you. Provide them with plenty of shade, and if they are unable to figure it out, put them in the shade or in your house (with water).
- Your dog could get heat stress, which could include heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, unsteadiness, a staggering gait, vomiting, or a deep red or purple tongue. If your pet does become overheated, you need to immediately lower his body temperature. Move your pet into the shade and apply cool (not cold) water over his body to gradually lower his core body temperature. Apply cold towels or ice packs to your pet's head, neck, and chest only. Let your pet drink small amounts of water or lick ice cubes. Most importantly, get him to a veterinarian immediately.
