Every Halloween, we take safety precautions for our children, but often forget that our pets may be in deadly danger.
Black Cats Beware! Between teenager "pranks" and the growing fad of "witchcraft", we must take extra precautions to protect out pets from harm. "Witchcraft", an alarming trend popular with SOME Goth teens & cult groups seem to think that their All Hallows Eve is not complete without a black cat sacrifice. We kid you not. Anyhoo... this sick tradition is enough of a threat that is best to lock all the felines inside for the night. Luckily, the chances of your cat being abducted are RARE, however every year we hear on the news that more and more, specifically black cats, missing after the holiday. For safety of your cat (especially black), it is best to bring them into the house at night, or a few days before Halloween. Keep them inside for the entire day of Halloween if possible.
For those who have outdoor cats, it's time to dust off the litter box and buy a small bag of litter. Keep the house full of toys and food to help distract them from being left in. During trick or treater hours, lock them up in a separate portion of you home. Otherwise, every time you open the door, Felix may bolt out the door to escape the noise. Make sure your pets are wearing proper identification, in case they escape.
Halloween is also a time for mischief. Sugar intoxicated kids may feel its funny to play pranks with your pets as well. Don't over look the hound of the house. We feel it is a good idea to bring in your dogs indoors Halloween night.
Candy, candy, candy.... There's candy every where. Although I live for the stuff, our pets should never have ANY. Keep candy bowls up high where pooch can't get to it. Dogs have been known to eat entire bags of chocolates WITH the paper and foil on which can lead to an expensive trip to the vet ! Chocolate may be FATAL to dogs as well.
Dressing up for Halloween is a lot of fun, but also dangerous. Make sure your pets costume does not interfere with there breathing, hearing, site, barking/meowing and movement. If you do dress your pet up, please send us a picture, we would love to see!
