I have an 11mo. old male, neutered, dachsund. Lovealbe, sweet, sleeps with my son, everything I dreamed of in a dog until I leave the house. The first time he chewed the carpet, 2nd time, chewed thru baby gate, 3rd time escaped from a metal cage, 4th time escaped from padlocked metal cage, 5th time escaped from plastic crate. So I decided to try leaving him outdoors. When I got home I thought, wow!, this is working great until my hard of hearing neighbor came over and told me the dog howls the whole time I'm gone. I even tried confining him to the laundry room and he chewed off the molding on my door. Does anyone know how to stop this behavior? He is so passive and playful and I understand he misses me, but I am a stay at home mom and am gone for only short periods to do errands and run kids to school. When I have tried confining him I do leave his favorite toys with him. HELP!!

hi, im new here, but try training your dog. It not only give you confedence, but your dog as well. I guess this sound mean, but I believe it makes a big diffence in you and your dogs quality of life. i would suggest a combination of in home training (The Art of Raising a Puppy (Hardcover) by New Skete Monks) And go to a petstore or local trainer for additional training and work around other people and dogs. Our family did this combination and our neighbors and friends try to steal our dog (because she is so good).

ok the last person said try training your dog! well no duh! i think what they ment to say is consistency. not only that but dont give em as much freedom to tear every thing up find an area where you can give him his own den space shut him off in a kitchen or an area he can feel safe and pick up the things that arent ment to be chewed give his chew toys with cheese in em or a good bone to chew, not only that and this is soooooo important take the time before you leave to do some activities like basic training, a walk or some major playing, your dog has pent up energy and its taking out on your home. trust me set boundaries! and an exercise program you will thank me later!
