What to do if our are confronted:
- Stand still, stop what you are doing.
- Don't panic, If you panic the dog will also. Neither of you can think and respond in the correct way if you panic.
- Position yourself so you always have the dog in front of you. Try not to corner yourself or the dog.
- Don't turn your back on the dog.
- Don't run or scream. Or the dog will follow.
- Put something in front of you and the dog. A clipboard, briefcase, or mail bag/cart. This will give you a barrier of protection.
- Keep the object level with the dog's head. Don't wave it around.
- Tell the dog, "NO!" Use a firm and even voice. Make the dog respect your voice.
What to do if you are bitten:
- Get and accurate description of the dog.
- Find out where the dog lives.
- Report the bite to the Department of Animal Control.
- Get medical attention for any animal bite, they can easily become infected.
