Be very sure that you are not taking someone's pet. If the cat is acting upset inside, it could be because it is uncomfortable, because it lives elsewhere. If possible, look at it's lower belly for a small scar. If it has been spayed, it's definitely someone's pet, or was at one time. Remember some female cats can remain very small, even into adulthood. If it's underweight, and you have really decided that it does not have a home, then next thing is to make sure it's transition is smooth.

Do not give the cat a bath. It will be stressed out enough as it is. If the cat needs to be wiped down, there are pet wipes you can purchase from Pet Co. that are gentle and cleansing. Your vet will recommend some flea control strategies when you have your appointment. If the cat has not been spayed, make an appointment, and make sure the cat will have quiet time to recover. You may want to wait at least one to two weeks before the operation, so you cat has time to adjust.

The cat will mostly likely NOT like your dog. When you get the dog home, keep the dog separated from the cat. Make sure the cat has a large potty box, and keep it clean. The cat litter box may be a new concept, so keep it cleaned every day to avoid accidents. Once the cat is adjusted inside your home for a least one to two weeks, you could introduce your dog to the cat. However, if your dog is hyper and you know it will chase the cat, you may want to wait longer.

The key is to really absorb that this cat will be a life change for you. Once vacation is over, you are responsible for this kitty and her future. This cat sounds like it is an outdoor cat right now. For the short term (at least) it will have to be an indoor cat, so it does not run away, or get hurt.

Good luck and I hope everything works out with your new kitty!
