We have trapped a ferrel pregnant cat "Tux", she has been around for two years - have fed her whenever she has come by. In July she brought a litter of five to show us and we could not catch any of them, she moved them a couple of days later and returned weeks later pregnant again. We trapped her this last friday night, brought her to the vet and she tested negative to feline leukemia. The vet did not have the opportunity to actually determine how far along in the pregnancy she is - estimated by looks only maybe she has 2 to 4 wks to go before giving birth! She is now in our pole barn in a cage 3 feet long, 21" wide and 19" high, a litter box and a cardboard bed box I made with her water and food fit in there. She has an upper respetory infection, so we are treating her with liquid antiobiotics in her food, she is eating well and even used the litter box. She doesn't move from the box when we are in the room and just hisses at us - I tried to pet her and she got upset and took a swing at me. She looks depressed and angry - I don't know what to do - she needs to stay confined till she gives birth and then another 4-6 wks till the kittens are weaned. How can I make her more comfortable? What can we do to be able to get near her and her kittens when they arrive? She doesn't have a lot of room in the cage - is it cruel to keep her in there? I am afraid if we block off a room in the pole barn she will dart off at the first opportunity.
-Josie

Keep her trapped. As long as she doesnt overheat she should be fine. Remember you are talking about a pregnant cat. Her aggresion may get worse after she delivers since her job is protecting the kittens.

You are doing good!

Thank you for your quick reply - we will keep her trapped. Is there anything we can do to win her over?
-Josie

You may want to hide the cage ...give her some privacy. Thats why mommas hide the kitties.

Win her over? Time. If its not in her nature it wont happen.

I am a Grandmother - Tux had her kittens last night, 4 that we can tell maybe 5...she is not letting us near enough to see - and has taken up growling at us. She is doing fine though - she has eaten and is nursing her babies. Any advice you can offer? I can't change the bedding she delivered on in fear she will attack me.
